ALYF x IFLRY: Joint Statement on the Crisis of Political Freedoms in Burkina Faso and Guinea

The International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) and the Africa Liberal Youth for Freedom (ALYF) express their grave concern and deep dismay regarding the accelerating erosion of democratic space in Burkina Faso and Guinea.
In Burkina Faso, the adoption by the Transitional Legislative Assembly on February 9, 2026, of a bill aimed at dissolving all political formations and repealing the 2001 Party Charter marks an unprecedented historical regression of democracy.
By abolishing the legal framework for pluralism, the transitional authorities are delivering a direct blow to the very foundations of a free society.
Simultaneously, in Guinea, the brutal dissolution of forty political parties on the night of March 6–7, 2026, specifically targeting major opposition forces such as the UFDG, RPG, and UFR, constitutes an alarming lockdown of public life, occurring only a few months after the presidential elections.
IFLRY and ALYF reiterate that a healthy democracy cannot exist without pluralistic voices and the fundamental right to organize politically.
We express our full solidarity with the activists, civil society organizations, and citizens who aspire to exercise their civic rights despite the risk of reprisals.
Consequently, we urge the authorities of Burkina Faso and Guinea to restore the freedoms of association and expression and to engage in sincere dialogue to ensure a genuine return to constitutional order that respects the sovereign will of the people.
