Accountability in the Strongman Era: The Case for Renewed Female Leadership

Rabat, Morocco
-

Are we navigating a world where rules, both domestic and international, seem to be losing their weight? Has this "strongman era" replaced political consensus with the raw political will of leaders who operate without accountability? This leadership style is defined by high-stakes gambling and uncertainty, the antithesis of liberal values.

In contrast, young liberals advocate for a value-centered leadership that prioritizes the collective good, stable coalitions, and international alliances.

This clash of values occurs against a backdrop of collapsing public trust. According to the 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer, over 50% of young people (18–34) now approve of hostile activism to drive change. When violence is viewed as a legitimate political tool, and disinformation fuels a record-high fear of discrimination, from Malaysia to Sweden, democratic safeguards are in peril.

Within this context, the IFLRY Female Leadership Programme is more critical than ever. Launched in 2021, the programmes promote honest leadership and meaningful impact as the necessary antidote to the strongman model. A female leadership that delivers and value centered in our commitment.

From 3-6 April, we are looking forward to female political young leaders and activists from Europe, Africa and the Middle East to join us in this new Female Leadership Academy 2026!
